What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster

Accepted materials, prohibited items and why the rules exist.

Generally accepted

Wood, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, furniture, roofing shingles, siding, yard debris, general household junk, most non-Freon appliances and scrap metal.

Never accepted

Paint and solvents, motor oil, fuel, batteries, pesticides, asbestos, medical waste, propane tanks and anything sealed under pressure. These are regulated and landfills reject the entire load if they find them.

Handled separately

Tires, mattresses, refrigerators and freezers with refrigerant, televisions and computer monitors. Most of these can go, but they carry a per-item fee and need to be declared in advance.

Why it matters

A contaminated load can be rejected at the gate, which means a return trip and a charge that nobody wants. Two minutes of sorting on the front end avoids it.
